Bee Sting

In school, I had always been excellent at spelling. Fourth grade came around and it was time for the school Spelling Bee. Instead of going through with the standard procedure of having a class spelling bee as a preliminary round, our teacher simply picked the two students with the hands-down highest spelling grades in class. I made perfect scores through spelling test after spelling test. The subject was ever even hardly an issue for me, and my brain was always wired be a pretty good speller. I was so ready for it.

In the school-wide spelling bee, I lost to the word "gale".

Oh man... words I lost on:
whisk (you know the detergent doesn't have an "h" in it!)
windmill (she pronounced it "wind-meel," so guess how I spelled it?)

What's really funny is I was always a shoe-in to be a part of the school-wide spelling bee, but then did horrible. However, it was exactly the opposite in the geography bee. I stunk at geography, but one year somehow managed to get in the school-wide one, and got second place.

I lost on "ferment"... ironic considering my further studies.
