Salve, Emperator! (Moritui Nolumus Mori!)

Eddie Izzard (British transvestite stand-up comedian, and incidentally one of my very favorites) once said in his show Dressed to Kill that we, America, are the next Roman Empire. (See clip here).

Today, I looked up President Obama's acceptance speech on YouTube so that I could watch it. And watching it, with the wild and waving crowds, the figures of power so focused on center stage, the addressing, the responses, all the emotion and bravery and truth and hope and promise and inspiration and whatever sundry rubbish you could toss in, I thought as I watched the cameras pan over the cheering, nearly frenzied masses...

".........

Criminy....

we ARE the next Roman Empire."

(And you all know what happened to the Roman Empire! ;] )

(PS -- Dressed to Kill was made years and years ago, Eddie Izzard does not mean our current president at the end of the clip.)

Every time you mention the election, I want to leave a comment with an interesting tidbit about how interesting this election is. Which more or less has nothing to do with the topic at hand, but as you are in Germany, well... I think you'll enjoy knowing. SO. The inauguration this year is going to be huge. As in, huge huge. I've been reading articles about people that live in the D.C. area having distant family and acquaintances call them for a place to crash. In effect, they'll have so many people sleeping in their house a lot of people described it as "a big sleepover." I wish there was a way for me to just be in D.C. during that time because I think it will be a lot of fun, and kind of monumental buuuuuut.... I can't. You actually have to have a ticket to go to the inauguration, anyways. But my friend Jenny has one, so HOPEFULLY she'll like.... tell me all about it and whatnot.

By the way, it's kind of a given that, eventually, all countries will fall. ... wow, I almost started writing a compare/contrast essay on us and the Roman empire. Except I have class. And need to make my lunch. And whatnot. Teehee!

Is that the Jenny I met? And does she have to tell you about it because it won't be broadcast or something... ?

I hate big concerts, so I think I would just die if I went to the inauguration...

Baha... don't tell me how that's a given. It's that same feeling that drives me towards apathy more than anything about this entire election that so many gazillions are excited about right now. Frankly speaking. But it's my nature to strive not to get overexcited about things to come...

Izzard's point is not especially original and ...*just noticed the "Dressed to Kill was made years and years ago"* Anyways, the idea of the "American Empire" and the similarity of America to the Roman Empire has been around for a while. I have a friend who did write an essay on it back in high school (around 8 to 10 years ago for him) and it wasn't really an original idea then. Still, it's fun to explore the similarities.

This is not necessarily a comment on this post, though I did watch the election and acceptance speech...

But I hope you're having a wonderful time over there. Please be safe and take care of yourself. Though things will be different when/if you return to Vandy-land, I'd love to sit down and hear all about it. :)

Alwayz and forever,
